Patreon Mindset Sample: Mental Reps
Mental Reps
Visualization is a huge component of mindset, but it can be hard to know what to visualize. Many times we visualize ourselves succeeding, scoring the goal, making the big save, crushing the big talk we have to give. It’s not surprising that some of these would largely focus on the positive feelings of joy and accomplishment after. That’s okay to channel those good feelings before a performance or game, but what about everyday life for improvement?
This is what I want to challenge you on today. Can you take the time to take mental reps of a skill you want to improve? Can you visualize the tasks you need to do? The problems that may arise and how you would combat them? Set a timer for simply 5 minutes and see how far you can go.
If you enjoy that, increase it to 10 minutes. I was speaking with a player recently who said she stood in the middle of a field and went through an entire mock practice with her eyes close and physically moving through the motions as if it was all happening in front of her.
There have been studies done showing the efficacy of mental reps in strength training through injury as well, with participants able to maintain their muscle mass with added mental reps!
You have to make sure when you try this you are envisioning as much detail as possible and fully engaged in it. Ideally, you’d want to be in a quiet place, but your posture and movements are up to you! Give it a try and let me know what you think!
